Several Inmates Sickened in MDC Incident

Just before 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 17, six inmates at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) were sickened by an unknown substance. The officer in the housing area immediately called a medical code, initiating a response by MDC’s medical contractor, Correct Care Solutions (CCS). CCS determined at least one of the inmates needed to be transported to University of New Mexico Hospital by ambulance. Several ambulances arrived at MDC within minutes to provide assistance.

Three inmates were transported to UNMH. Their exact conditions are unknown at this time, but their injuries are considered nonlife-threatening. The housing area where the incident occurred has been evacuated. Firefighters from Bernalillo County responded to the facility and were assisted by Albuquerque Fire Rescue.

An investigation into the incident is now underway by MDC staff and the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office.

This is a developing situation. MDC will provide updates as new information is available.
