Metropolitan Detention Center

The Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) of 2003 is a federal law that prohibits sexual misconduct in correctional setting such as prisons, jails, lockups, juvenile facilities, and immigration detention facilities. PREA applies to all inmates, employees, contractors and volunteers. Under this law, sexual misconduct includes:

  • Inmate on inmate sexual assault and abuse
  • Staff on inmate sexual assault/abuse
  • Sexual harassment of inmates by staff or other inmates
  • Retaliation for making a PREA report

 

Bernalillo County and the Metropolitan Detention Center's Role in the Prison Rape Elimination Act

It is the mission of the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center to provide a safe and secure environment for all inmates ensuring their right to be free from the threat of any form of sexual abuse, sexual harassment and retaliation.

The Metropolitan Detention Center maintains zero tolerance toward any form of sexual assault, sexual harassment and retaliation between inmates and staff, contractors, volunteers and other inmates and enforces this policy in compliance with the PREA standards.

MDC is committed to providing a safe, healthy environment for staff and inmates. Every report is taken seriously and all allegations will be thoroughly, promptly, and objectively investigated.

 

Report Sexual Abuse / Harassment

If you have information regarding a MDC inmate who has been the victim of sexual abuse or sexual harassment while under MDC custody, please report it in one of the following ways:

In your report, it is critical that you provide as many details as possible. This includes:

  • The name(s) and locations of persons involved
  • The name(s) or description of any witnesses to the incident
  • Inmate # (if an inmate)
  • A brief description of the incident(s)
  • A brief description of where the event(s) occurred
  • The date(s), time and place of occurrence(s)
  • Names and contact information of others who might have additional information about the incident
  • Your contact phone number and address (optional)

 

Submit a PREA Report

If you have reason to believe an MDC inmate is being sexually assaulted or sexually harassed while incarcerated at MDC, you may report the abuse on behalf of the inmate. You may submit your report using the convenient online form below. If you would prefer to stay anonymous, place “anonymous” in the “Your First Name” and Your Last Name” fields. Once the form is submitted, the PREA Department will receive an e-mail notification of the request. The inmate will then be contacted and an investigation will be initiated.
