It is the mission of the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center to provide a safe and secure environment for all inmates that is free from the threat of any form of sexual misconduct, sexual abuse and sexual harassment.

The Metropolitan Detention Center maintains zero tolerance toward any form of sexual misconduct, sexual abuse and sexual harassment between inmates and staff, contractors, volunteers and other inmates and enforces this policy by ensuring the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center complies with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) Standards.

The Metropolitan Detention Center has established a fair and impartial investigation process for all complaints of employee misconduct to determine the validity of allegations and to impose administrative and criminal actions when complaints are substantiated. Upon receipt of a complaint, a supervisor begins the gathering of statements and preservation of possible evidence.  Information is then sent to the Office of Professional Standards (OPS) for review and further investigation if warranted. When criminal activity is involved, MDC will contact the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department so a criminal investigation can be initiated. MDC will continue their administrative investigation to verify if any MDC policies have been violated.

If you have reason to believe an MDC inmate is being sexually assaulted or sexually harassed while incarcerated at MDC, you may report the abuse on behalf of the inmate. You may submit your report using the convenient online form below. Once the form is submitted, the PREA Department will receive an e-mail notification of the request. The inmate will then be contacted and an investigation will be initiated.
