BernCo Energy Projects and Manager Honored


The Public Works Division is the recipient of the 2018 Corporate Energy Management Award by the New Mexico Association of Energy Engineers for outstanding accomplishments in developing, organizing, managing and implementing a corporate energy management program.

Also honored is Fleet and Facilities Department Director Mary Murnane who was selected for the 2018 Energy Manager of the Year Award by the New Mexico Association of Energy Engineers Board of Directors for outstanding individual accomplishments in promoting the practices, principles of energy management and development.

Energy projects recognized:

  • Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) energy project that is currently under construction and consists of LED lighting, new HVAC equipment, duct sealing, energy efficient transformers, solar photovoltaics, HVAC controls and other measures.
  • Landfill methane gas to energy project in cooperation with the City of Albuquerque and the Environmental Protection Agency in 2012.
  • One-megawatt system installation in 2013.

“Energy sustainability has been a pursuit of Bernalillo County for years,” says County Manager Julie Morgas Baca. “Our Public Works Division and Mary Murnane have worked tenaciously in this endeavor, to the benefit of the entire county, and are deservingly recognized and honored.”

Every day, in every task, the Public Works Division Fleet and Facilities Management Department reassesses for and seeks energy efficient opportunities in its equipment and structures. Currently, the county is simultaneously undertaking solar photovoltaic systems in 13 buildings.

The New Mexico Association of Energy Engineers is a nonprofit professional society whose mission is to promote the scientific and educational interests of those engaged in the energy industry and to foster action for sustainable development.
