    New Mexico Martin Luther King State Commission Brings Youth Conference to Bernalillo County Youth Services Center


    Bernco LogoThe New Mexico Martin Luther King Jr. State Commission is taking Dr. King’s message to incarcerated youth at the Bernalillo County Youth Services Center.

    On Thursday June 5, the MLK State Commission is offering a mini-youth leadership conference to residents detained at the Bernalillo County Youth Services Center.

    The MLK State Commission will share some of the same presentations and workshops that will be presented at its full 17th Annual Youth Leadership Conference scheduled this Friday through Sunday at the Sheraton Airport Hotel in Albuquerque.

    Inspiring guest speakers will engage residents at the Youth Services Center as well as other youth participating in the full conference.

    The guest speakers include:

    • Dr. Ted Sutton: CEO & founder of Sutton House Inc., and CEO & founder of the Ministers of Defense. Certified gang awareness instructor and intervention specialist
    • Theresa Gonzales: Works at the University of New Mexico as program coordinator of El Centro de la Raza, a student support center that assists with college recruitment and retention of Latino and non-traditional students of color
    • Cathryn McGill: Founder/director of the New Mexico Black History Month Organizing Committee and producer for Rainbow Studio Theater, the state’s only professional African American theater troupe

    The speakers will host engaging workshops and present about Dr. King’s principles of non-violence. Art and essay contests along with a talent show are part of the conference.

    Youth Services Center mini-conference schedule on Thursday, June 5:

    8 a.m. - 8:45 a.m.: Introduction assembly and keynote speaker

    8:45 a.m. - 3:15 p.m.: Workshops and lunch

    3:15 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Talent show and culmination of mini-conference
